John D. Hancock ist ein US-amerikanischer Bühnen- und Filmregisseur, Produzent und Drehbuchautor. Er ist der Sohn von Ralph und Ella Mae Rosenthal Hancock. Sein Vater war Musiker beim NBC Symphony Orchestra in Chicago, Illinois, seine Mutter Lehrerin. Hancock verbrachte seine Jugend abwechselnd in seinem Elternhaus in Chicago und auf der Obstfarm seiner Familie in La Porte, Indiana. In der High School war er stellvertretender Konzertmeister des Chicago Youth Orchestra und spielte Violine. Bekannt wurde er vor allem durch seine Arbeit an „Bang the Drum Slowly“.
