Edith Norma Shearer war eine kanadisch-amerikanische Schauspielerin. Von Mitte der 1920er bis in die 1930er Jahre zählte sie zu den beliebtesten Schauspielerinnen Nordamerikas, beginnend mit dem Film „Die Geschiedene“ (1930), für den sie den Oscar als Beste Hauptdarstellerin gewann. Im Gegensatz zu vielen ihrer MGM-Kolleginnen ließ Shearers Ruhm nach ihrem Rückzug aus dem Filmgeschäft stark nach. Zum Zeitpunkt ihres Todes 1983 war sie bestenfalls noch für ihre Rollen in „Die Frauen“, „Marie Antoinette“ und „Romeo und Julia“ bekannt. Shearers Vermächtnis wurde in den 1990er-Jahren mit der Veröffentlichung zweier Biografien und der Veröffentlichung ihrer Filme durch TCM (Turner Classic Movies) und VHS neu bewertet. Viele dieser Filme waren seit der Einführung des Production Code rund sechzig Jahre zuvor nicht mehr gezeigt worden. Im März 2008 erschienen zwei ihrer bekanntesten Filme aus der Zeit vor dem Code, „The Divorcee“ und „A Free Soul“, auf DVD.
