The Derailed (1913)
Władka, a seamstress, is in love with a brave working man, but her mother is constantly complaining about their poverty and telling her, “Władka, don’t be foolish.” Influenced by her mother’s advice, Władka falls prey to the schemes of Nolski, a shady character who will stoop to anything, including pimping. She becomes the count’s mistress, eventually driving him to ruin and suicide. The news of the count’s death initially comes as a shock to Władka, but she soon shakes off the unpleasant impression. Raising a glass of champagne, she exclaims, “Long live life!” and begins listening to Nolski’s proposal for a “new and profitable venture.” No copies of the film have survived.
