Yang Zongbao's birthday celebration is interrupted by the news of his death whilst defending the three strategic passes, leaving his young son the only remaining male of the family. Led by the 107-year-old matron She Taijun and Zongbao's fearsome widow Mu Guiying, twelve women of the Yang family set forth to defend the Northern Song Dynasty from the Western Xia invaders.
