Verdwaalde Zielen (1923)
Maria, a country girl who dreams of a better life, meets a womanizer from the city. When she sees him a second time, he persuades her to follow him to the city. There, they live in a small attic room in the harbor district. A few months later, she gives birth to a daughter. Her lover abandons her, and in despair, she returns to her father’s farm, where her former lover comes to find her after serving a seven-year prison sentence. He shoots her father, drowns her little daughter in a well, and then throws himself under a train. Maria later enters a convent.
