Konosuke, the chairman of a securities firm, committed suicide. His wife, Tomoyo, had conspired with her husband's secretary, Mimura, to steal a vase—a treasure from the Russian Romanov dynasty worth hundreds of millions—an act that drove the company to bankruptcy and pushed Konosuke to take his own life. The pair planned to flee overseas to sell the vase on the black market. Murota, a corrupt detective who had been tracking their movements, intended to snatch the vase for himself if the opportunity arose.
