Biography:

Shri Shantaram Rajaram Vankudre, popularly known as Annasaheb, was born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, and was a legendary figure in Indian cinema. Beginning his journey during the silent film era, he evolved into a visionary filmmaker, actor, director, writer, and producer in both Hindi and Marathi cinema. He was instrumental in shaping early Indian filmmaking with socially relevant and technically innovative movies. He also served as the 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐏𝐀 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟏𝟗𝟒𝟎 𝐭𝐨 𝟏𝟗𝟒𝟒. His legacy continues through the V. Shantaram Awards and his enduring influence on Indian filmmaking.After parting ways with Prabhat Films, he founded Rajkamal Kalamandir in 1942, which became one of the most respected production houses in Mumbai. His iconic films like "Do Aankhen Barah Haath", "Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje", and "Dr. Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani" not only won National Awards but also gained international acclaim. In recognition of his extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema, he was honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest film honor. The Government of India also issued a commemorative postage stamp in his name. The Government of Maharashtra further commemorates his legacy through the Chhatrapati V.
