Biography:

Giorgos Skampardonis (Greek: Γιώργος Σκαμπαρδώνης, Thessaloniki, November 1953) is a prose writer and journalist from Thessaloniki. He was a key collaborator and director of several magazines and newspapers in the city (Enteufkterio, Th' 97, Macedonia, etc.). He also collaborated with radio and television stations. In his short stories and novels, with realistic writing, he deals with everyday life in Thessaloniki during the German Occupation and the more recent past. Giorgos Skampardonis was born in Thessaloniki in 1953. He studied French Literature at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He collaborated with the magazines Enteufkterio, O Paratiritis, Parafyada and Tram. He directed the newspaper Thessaloniki and the magazines Th' 97 (Ipektsi Award), Tamarix and Chilia Dentra. He also served as director of the artistic insert "Panselinos" of the newspaper Kyriakatiki Makedonia, which in 2000 was honored with the European Newspaperdesign Awards. He was a collaborator of Kyriakatiki Eleftherotypia for two years. He also wrote scripts for television documentaries, such as "Theatre in Thessaloniki 1912-1985", "The Tsitsanis of Thessaloniki" etc., while in collaboration with director Pantelis Voulgaris, he wrote the script for his second film "Everything is a Road". He also wrote the text for the musical theater performance "Like an Enchanted Song" which was staged at the Athens Concert Hall, directed by Sotiris Hatzakis. He served as chairman of the Board of Directors of ERT-3 and director of the artistic zone of 102 Fm of ERT-3. He is a member of the Greek National Academy of Sciences and the Board of Directors of the Cultural Foundation. He is a member of the Athens Writers' Association. His novels Gernao Epitychos and Ouzeri Tsitsanis have been adapted for the theater (State Theater of Northern Greece, directed by Sotiris Hatzakis, 2002 and 2005 respectively). In 2015, Ouzeri Tsitsanis was also adapted for the cinema, directed by Manousos Manousakis. For his collection of short stories The Narrowness of Fabrics, he was honored with the State Short Story Award in 1993. He was also honored with the Short Story Award of the magazine Diavázo in 2004 for the collection of short stories Hanging on a Flea. In 2010 he received the Botsis Foundation Prize and in 2012 the "Petros Haris" Prize of the Academy of Athens for his book Patrols about Many Troubles. His short stories have been translated into German, English, French, Dutch, Czech, Hebrew, Hungarian and Italian.
