Sofía Betarte Zabala is a film director, cinematographer, and documentarian born in Sweden to a Uruguayan-Colombian family during their exile. Based in Uruguay, she earned a degree in Audiovisual Communication from Universidad ORT Uruguay and continued her cinematic training at the prestigious International Film and Television School (EICTV) in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. Her artistic work focuses on creative non-fiction and auteur documentary filmmaking, exploring themes such as migration, labor precarity, motherhood, and intimate human relationships through a close and socially committed lens. Notable among her work is the direction and cinematography of the feature-length documentary Un sueño errante (Errant Dream), a project recognized at industry platforms like DocuLab at the Guadalajara International Film Festival and supported by the INCAU fund, alongside subsequent non-fiction productions such as La piedra de la locura.
