Steven Breckon is a Los Angeles-based director of photography. He grew up in a family of commercial fishermen in Haida Gwaii and Southeast Alaska before studying marine ecology at the University of British Columbia; subsequently, he pursued cinematography and graduated with an MFA from the American Film Institute, where he received the Alfred P. Sloan Scholarship for his scientific background and creative promise. Breckon's narrative cinematography credits include the psychological drama The Plague (2025), directed by Charlie Polinger, which premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival and received critical attention. Before The Plague, Breckon shot A Place to Stay (2018), a short film directed by Charlie Polinger during his time at AFI. His credits also include work on Where the Water Runs (2018), and his camera department contributions extend to films such as War Pony (2022), where he served as second unit director of photography. Breckon was nominated for the American Society of Cinematographers' 2026 Spotlight Award for The Plague and, in 2025, nominated by the Indiana Film Journalists Association for Best Cinematography for the same film; he won the 2019 ASC Heritage Award, presented by the American Society of Cinematographers and the American Film Institute, for A Place to Stay. In addition to features and shorts, Breckon's cinematography portfolio includes commercial work and pilots.
