Pyotr Alekseyevich Kropotkin (December 9, 1842 – February 8, 1921) was a world-renowned Russian revolutionary, geographer, philosopher, and the foremost theorist of anarcho-communism. Born into the highest ranks of the Russian aristocracy as a prince, he famously renounced his royal privileges to champion the cause of the working class and social justice. Beyond his monumental political impact, Kropotkin was an accomplished scientist and explorer. His groundbreaking geographical expeditions in Siberia revolutionized the scientific understanding of East Asian topography. As a philosopher, his most influential work, "Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution" (1902), challenged social Darwinism by arguing that cooperation, rather than competition, is the driving force behind the survival of species and human progress. Imprisoned for his activism in both Russia and France, Kropotkin spent decades in exile in Western Europe, becoming an internationally revered intellectual figure. He returned to Russia following the 1917 Revolution but remained a staunch critic of the rising Bolshevik authoritarianism. His death in 1921 marked the end of an era; his massive funeral in Moscow became a historic milestone as the final legally permitted mass demonstration of independent anarchist groups in Soviet history, captured in the landmark 1921 documentary film.
