Biography:

Steven Keen is a German humanitarian documentary filmmaker and social entrepreneur based on Crete. He spent a decade filming in the places the tourism industry overlooks, working alongside child laborers and communities rarely given the frame. Steven wrote, directed and produced Fisher of Kids (2013), the true story of James Kofi Annan, carrying a title song performed by two-time Grammy winner Jason Mraz. The film premiered at the Goethe-Institut in Accra, screened at the Hay Festival in the UK, and was shown in Washington, D.C. on World Day Against Child Labour. It was an Official Selection at Kinofilm Manchester, the Aesthetica Short Film Festival in York and the Young European Film Forum in Cardiff, and is held in the archives of the United Nations' International Labour Organization. Earlier he produced various shorts filmed in India, among them Destiny (2012), an early screen role for the Indian actress Lehar Khan. In 2025 he directed, produced, shot and edited a twenty-five-part web series filmed across Crete. He has since moved from documenting the world to building in it, founding CRETAN®, a responsible tourism social enterprise anchored on Crete, and writing a family of independent, evidence-based travel resources. Steven holds an MA in Film from the University of South Wales and is completing an MSc in Responsible Tourism Management. He works in English, German and Greek.
