A lo largo de dos años, How We Get Free sigue a Elisabeth Epps en su lucha por abolir la fianza en metálico en Colorado y poner fin a la criminalización de la pobreza. Epps es la fundadora del Colorado Freedom Fund, uno de los más de 100 fondos comunitarios para fianzas que existen en todo el país y que se pusieron en marcha para ayudar a las personas encarceladas que no pueden pagar su fianza antes del juicio. Para Epps, este trabajo es personal: ella misma pasó un tiempo en la cárcel, siendo testigo de las condiciones que está tan desesperada por cambiar.
