Todos los perros van al cielo... o al menos hasta ahora. A las puertas del cielo es donde se encuentra Charlie, un pastor alemán granuja y estafador, asesinado por su antiguo socio, el malvado Carafea, para hacerse con el control del negocio de apuestas ilegales más importante de Nueva Orleans. Con la inestimable ayuda de su fiel amigo Richie y de María, una niña huérfana que puede hablar con los animales, Charlie tendrá una oportunidad para demostrar que merece su entrada en el cielo.
