Ambientada en el Tokio actual, sigue a un actor estadounidense que lucha por encontrar un propósito en la vida hasta que consigue un trabajo inusual: trabajar para una agencia japonesa de "familias de alquiler", interpretando papeles de suplente para desconocidos. A medida que se sumerge en el mundo de sus clientes, comienza a establecer vínculos genuinos que difuminan las líneas entre la actuación y la realidad. Al enfrentarse a las complejidades morales de su trabajo, redescubre el propósito, la pertenencia y la tranquila belleza de las relaciones humanas.
