Cuando la joven Vicky Austin, de 16 años, su hermana Suzy y su hermano pequeño Rob visitan a su abuelo en Seven Bay Island, Vicky se enfrenta varios desafíos inesperados. Su amado abuelo, el reverendo retirado Eaton, parece estar gravemente enfermo, pero trata de fingir que no pasa nada. Vicky conoció al pijo pero emocionalmente problemático Zachary Gray el verano anterior, y ahora reaparece. Por otro lado el joven Adam Eddington, de 17 años, recluta a Vicky para que lo ayude con un proyecto de investigación trabajando con un delfín llamado Basil. Vicky descubre que puede comunicarse telepáticamente con el delfín... y posiblemente también con Adam.
