Estando de ruta hacia su nuevo hogar en las grandes llanuras del oeste, una joven se queda repentinamente viuda en medio del largo viaje en carreta. Con una dura temporada invernal acechando y sin recursos para regresar, la joven acepta el trato que le ofrece un granjero: casarse con él para ocuparse de su hija, a cambio de cobijo y de un pasaje de vuelta en primavera.
