Texas, año 1933. La joven maestra de escuela Novalyne Price conoce a un joven encantador, excéntrico e inestable emocionalmente, llamado Robert Howard. Robert es un escritor de cierto éxito en el campo de las novelas 'pulp', pues es el creador de "Conan el Bárbaro". La amistad pronto se convertirá en una especie de complicado noviazgo, en la que el difícil temperamento de Robert y la atadura de éste a su madre convaleciente no pondrá las cosas fáciles...
