El doctor Eric Kiviat, un paleontólogo algo desequilibrado, lleva treinta años investigando la supuesta existencia de un brontosaurio en el África Occidental. En ese campo cuenta con una competidora, la doctora Susan Mattews. Ella y su marido se adelantan en la investigación cuando averiguan la misteriosa causa de una epidemia que afecta a una tribu. Al parecer, los indígenas habían comido carne de una misteriosa y gigantesca criatura llamada ”Mokele mbembe".
