En 1984, Londres está gobernada por el partido totalitario del Gran Hermano. La intimidad y la libertad de pensamiento no existen. Las relaciones sexuales constituyen un delito. Winston Smith trabaja en los archivos del Ministerio de la Verdad reescribiendo y modificando la Historia. Su vida se verá seriamente amenazada cuando empiece a darse cuenta de que sus pensamientos no son tan ortodoxos como el Partido exige; además tiene una relación amorosa clandestina con Julia, una joven del departamento de novelas afiliada a la Liga Antisexo. Ambos saben que tendrán que pagar un precio muy alto por el crimen que están cometiendo y que no hay escapatoria posible.
