Proa al cielo (1956)
Douglas Bader, uno de los grandes héroes británicos de la II Guerra Mundial (1939-1945), vio incrementada su popularidad cuando, en 1954, tras publicarse su biografía, apareció una versión abreviada de la misma en la popular revista Reader's Digest. En esa obra se basó el film de Gilbert, el más taquillero de Inglaterra desde el estreno de “Lo que El Viento se Llevó”. A pesar de que a finales de los años 20, a Bader le habían amputado las dos piernas, tras un accidente aéreo, gracias a unas prótesis de aluminio pudo participar en la Batalla de Inglaterra.
