El Payaso Tito (Lon Chaney), adopta a una niña que bautiza como "Simonetta" (Loretta Young). Al crecer, la opulenta chica es objeto del deseo del noble Luigi (Nils Ashter). La víspera de su boda, Simonetta se entera que Tito la ama. ¿Cómo se resolverá este complejo pero simple (y enteramente humano y natural) dilema de vida y amor entre los protagonistas?
