La mente conserva los recuerdos dolorosos para protegernos, impidiendo que cometamos los mismos errores una y otra vez. Jim pensaba que cuando alguien vuelve al lugar donde le ocurrió una desgracia, puede llegar a olvidarla. Además, él necesitaba trabajar y la única plaza libre de profesor estaba en su pueblo natal, el lugar donde habían matado a su hermano y del que sus padres habían huido aterrorizados cuando sólo era un niño.
