En 1933, Violette Nozière (Isabelle Huppert), una muchacha de 18 años, vive con sus padres en un minúsculo apartamento, en condiciones muy modestas. Sus padres sueñan para Violette una existencia diferente a la suya, una existencia que no le pueden dar, no obstante. La muchacha, ahogada por esta atmósfera, decide frecuentar estudiantes, no tardando demasiado en contraer la sífilis, lo cual, obviamente, supondrá un escándalo en el seno de la família. Violette, exasperada por la actitud floja de sus padres, tomará una decisión inesperada y sorprendente...
