La prematura muerte de su madre durante un parto, arranca violentamente a Víctor Frankenstein de su idílica vida en Ginebra. Desde ese día, la posibilidad de vencer a la muerte será su obsesión y, por ello, decide estudiar medicina en Inglostadt. Allí conoce al siniestro profesor Waldman, de quien se rumorea que pasó su juventud estudiando la posibilidad de crear un ser humano. Víctor no sólo se interesa por sus experimentos, sino que está dispuesto a llegar hasta el fondo de la cuestión cueste lo que cueste.
