Jim Douglas es un joven piloto de carreras al que las cosas no le han ido muy bien. En la tienda del Sr. Thorndyke, conoce a Herbie, un curioso Wolkswagen que parece tener vida propia ya que actúa y se mueve por su cuenta. Herbie le sigue hasta su casa y se hacen amigos. Jim le da entonces unos pequeños retoques al coche para que pueda participar en grandes competiciones. La compenetración de los dos es total, y comienzan a competir en las primeras carreras...
