En 1957, en una pequeña población petrolera situada al oeste de Texas, Lou Ford (Casey Affleck), el ayudante del sheriff, un hombre afable y un poco simple, empieza a sufrir los ataques de la enfermedad que le hizo cometer un crimen en su juventud.
