México, 1938. Celebración del día de Difuntos. Con su país al borde de la guerra con Alemania, el cónsul británico en México, Geoffrey Firmin (Albert Finney), corta todo contacto con sus familiares y se sumerge en un proceso de autodestrucción mezclando el alcohol con los recuerdos.
