Arthur Goldman (Maximilian Schell) es un magnate judío de Nueva York que sufre una grave crisis mental que lo lleva al borde de la locura. Goldman acaba siendo capturado por agentes israelíes y juzgado por crímenes de guerra porque, en realidad, es Adolf Dorff, un coronel de las SS.
