Joey Coyle (Cusack) es un trabajador portuario en paro que un día encuentra una saca, con más de un millón de dólares, que se ha caído de un coche blindado. Sin dudarlo ni un momento, se queda con el dinero, viendo su gran oportunidad para darse la gran vida. Pero mantener un millón de dólares en secreto es una tarea sumamente difícil, sobre todo si comienzas a gastar el dinero de manera extravagante. No obstante, Joey hará hasta lo imposible por salir ileso de las investigaciones policiales y mantener, por supuesto, su millón de dólares...
