Una abeja llamada Barry B. Benson (Jerry Seinfeld) acaba de graduarse en la Universidad, pero le invade la desilusión cuando comprende que solo tiene una opción profesional, la miel. Sale por primera vez de la colmena y transgrede una de las reglas cardinales del mundo de las abejas al hablar con un ser humano, una florista de Nueva York llamada Vanessa (Renée Zellweger). Se queda atónito al descubrir que los humanos llevan siglos robando la miel de las abejas y entiende que su auténtica vocación es restablecer el orden de las cosas y demandar a las raza humana por robar la miel.
