Es el año 1914 y Richard Hannay, ingeniero de minas que está visitando Gran Bretaña por un corto tiempo antes de regresar a Sudáfrica, se sorprende cuando uno de sus vecinos, el coronel Scudder, irrumpe en sus habitaciones una noche y le cuenta una historia de que el durmiente de Prusia Los agentes planean pre-comenzar la Primera Guerra Mundial asesinando a un ministro de Asuntos Exteriores visitante. Sin embargo, Scudder es asesinado y Hannay es incriminada por los "durmientes". Huyendo a Escocia, Hannay intenta limpiar su nombre y detener a los agentes con la ayuda de Alex Mackenzie, pero no solo es perseguido por el Jefe Supt Lomas por la muerte de Scudder, sino también por los agentes encabezados por Appleton que ha logrado esconderse un puesto de alta posición en el gobierno británico ...
