Hank Mercer es un escritor de novelas de misterio que se ha cansado de su popular creación, el detective Biff Deegan. Atormentado entre su madre y su agente, que le recuerda su lucrativo contrato para más sagas de "Biff Deegan", Hank sueña con crear otro detective más intelectual, que utilice el cerebro en vez de pelearse para resolver los crímenes. Mientras discute con su agente durante un almuerzo de negocios, observa a una chica muy guapa y misteriosa, sentada entre dos hombres siniestros. Hank ve como la obligan a entrar en un coche. De repente, observa que sobre la mesa se han dejado una caja de cerillas con dos nombres escritos en ella. El hecho es tan apropiado para su nueva serie de novelas que hace un trato con su agente: si consigue resolver este misterio, se verá libre de Biff Deegan para siempre.
