Los Ángeles, 1948. Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins busca un trabajo honrado para poder sufragar los gastos de su casa. Acuciado por la falta de dinero, se ve obligado a aceptar el encargo de encontrar a una mujer blanca desaparecida hace pocos días. Sólo cuenta con una pista: la mujer en cuestión es muy aficionada a frecuentar los clubes nocturnos de jazz. Lo que en principio parece un trabajo fácil se convierte en una pesadilla al verse involucrado en dos violentos asesinatos que apuntan a una misteriosa mujer vestida de azul.
