Querido y de confianza para sus hombres, respetado como el capitán de submarinos con mayor experiencia de la Marina soviética, el Capitán Mikhail Polenin (Liam Neeson) es destituido del mando del K-19 cuando el liderazgo soviético decide que no está preparando su submarino insignia lo suficientemente rápido para su primera travesía. En su lugar, el Capitán Alexei Vostrikov (Harrison Ford), un oficial estrictamente "orientado a la misión" y con una voluntad de hierro, consigue sacar el K-19 al mar exactamente a la hora programada 16:00 horas del día 18 de Junio de 1961.
