La película, ambientada en Australia durante la época navideña, sigue la historia de Emmy, una escritora que, basándose en los diarios de su madre, ha conseguido convertir su último libro en un auténtico éxito. Una editorial le acaba de ofrecer un contrato millonario, pero antes la editora jefa y su hijo quieren conocer de primera mano cómo es la vida de la que Emmy habla en su libro. Pero hay un problema: esta vida no existe. Emmy no es más que una neoyorquina cualquiera que tendrá que aparentar, con la ayuda de su primo y del marido de este, una vida que no es la suya. ¿Cuánto puede durar esta farsa?
