Michael Jennings es un brillante ingeniero que trabaja en proyectos especializados para una compañía de alta tecnología. Cada vez que completa un trabajo, éste es borrado de su memoria para que no pueda divulgar ningún secreto de la corporación. Muy bien pagado, Jennings espera ganar 90 millones de dólares por su último proyecto, en él ha estado trabajando tres años. Pero una vez finalizado, en vez del cheque, se le dice que él mismo accedió a perder el derecho a su pago. Con la memoria borrada como en los trabajos anteriores, Jennings, con la ayuda de su compañera y amante Rachel, tratará de averiguar qué sucedió en todo ese tiempo, del que no recuerda nada.
