Robert Charles Durman Mitchum (Bridgeport, 6 de agosto de 1917 - Santa Bárbara, 1 de julio de 1997) fue un prolífico actor de cine y cantante estadounidense nominado al premio Óscar. Mitchum es recordado principalmente por sus papeles como protagonista en algunas de las obras más importantes del género conocido como cine negro, y considerado como el precursor del antihéroe prevalente en el cine de los años 1950 y 1960. Mitchum nació en Bridgeport, Connecticut. Su madre, Ann (de soltera Gunderson), descendiente de noruegos, y su padre, James Thomas Mitchum, trabajó en los astilleros y en el ferrocarril. Una hermana, Annette, (conocida como Julie Mitchum) nació en 1913. James Mitchum murió en un accidente en la terminal ferroviaria en Charleston, Carolina del Sur, en febrero de 1919. Robert tenía entonces 2 años de edad. Después de la muerte de su padre a Ann Mitchum le fue concedida una pensión del gobierno y pronto se dio cuenta de que estaba embarazada. Regresó con su familia en Connecticut y se casó con un ex mayor del Ejército británico que le ayudó a cuidar a los niños. En septiembre de 1919 nació su hijo, John. Cuando sus niños tenían edad suficiente para asistir a la escuela, Ann encontró empleo como linotipista. A lo largo de la infancia Mitchum, era conocido como un bromista y camorrero, a menudo involucrado en peleas y travesuras. Cuando tenía 12 años, su madre Ann le envió a vivir con sus abuelos, de Felton, Delaware, donde fue prontamente expulsado de su escuela secundaria por pelear con un director. A los 25 años por medio de un agente de talentos, amigo de su hermana lo convenció de convertirse en actor e ingresó al Long Beach Theater Guild, estando aún en formación, debido a su físico y particular tipo fue contratado en Hollywood para papeles cortos de rufianes. Su oportunidad llegó en 1943 en una serie de Westerns llamada Hopalong Cassidy de 1943, saltó a papeles más importantes como en 30 segundos sobre Tokio de Mervyn LeRoy y es nominado al Oscar por su interpretación en También eramos seres humanos de 1945 con el director William A. Wellman. Mitchum fue encasillándose en papeles del cine negro interpretándose prácticamente a si mismo en personajes inexpresivos, lacónicos, inestructurados y rebeldes, personificando soldados, marines y oficiales participando en filmes de corte bélicos, gangsters, westerns y dramáticos entre 1946 y 1957. Coincidió cuatro veces con la afamada actriz Deborah Kerr, en El cielo fue testigo, Mr. Allison (1957), Página en blanco (1960), Tres vidas errantes (1960) y Reunión en Fairborough (1985). Sus mejores actuaciones se albergan en Encrucijada de odios (1947) de Jacques Tourneur, El Gran Robo (1949), La noche del cazador (1955) y Cape Fear (El cabo del miedo, 1962). Tres décadas después, participó en el remake de este último filme que dirigió Martin Scorsese. Otros filmes que se recuerdan dentro de su historial son: River of No Return, con Marilyn Monroe; Con él llegó el escándalo, junto a un joven George Peppard; Ryan's Daughter (La hija de Ryan, 1970), dirigido por David Lean; y Embajador en Oriente Medio (The Ambassador, 1984), junto a Rock Hudson.
