Actriz de cine y teatro estadounidense que ha interpretado tanto papeles dramáticos como de comedia. Nacida Anna Maria Louisa Italiano en el Bronx (Nueva York), estudió en la Academia Americana de Arte Dramático. Pronto fue contratada por la 20th Century Fox y debutó en el cine en el pequeño papel de una cantante de cabaré en Niebla en el alma (1952, de Roy Ward Baker). Sin embargo, al no conseguir ningún papel interesante, y a pesar de las buenas críticas que acumulaba, decidió volver a Nueva York. Tras el éxito alcanzado con la producción de Broadway El milagro de Ana Sullivan (1960), regresó a Hollywood para repetir el papel en la versión cinematográfica dirigida en 1962 por Arthur Penn, interpretación por la que obtuvo el Oscar de la Academia a la mejor actriz. También estuvo nominada para el Oscar y obtuvo el galardón a la mejor actriz en el Festival de Cine de Cannes por su siguiente película, Siempre estoy sola (1964, de Jack Clayton). En 1967 interpretó el papel por el que es más popular, la madura señora Robinson que seduce a un joven Dustin Hoffman en El graduado (dirigida por Mike Nichols). Fue la perfecta compañera de reparto de Jack Lemmon en El prisionero de la Segunda Avenida (1975, de Melvin Frank) y de Shirley MacLane en Paso decisivo (1977, de Herbert Ross). Mostró talento para la comedia en Soy o no soy (1983, de Alan Johnson) y para la sensibilidad en La carta final (1987, de David Jones). Su habilidad para infundir, incluso al papel más rutinario, su energía dramática, la ha hecho estar siempre muy solicitada para papeles de reparto, como los de Trilogía de Nueva York (1988, de Paul Bogart), Malicia (1993, de Harold Becker), A casa por vacaciones (1995, de Jodie Foster) y Sunchaser (1996, de Michael Cimino). También ha continuado actuando en los teatros de Broadway y ha trabajado en televisión con éxito.
