Realizador cinematográfico, actor, guionista y productor estadounidense. Nació en el barrio neoyorquino de Brooklyn el 28 de junio de 1926 y su verdadero nombre es Melvyn Kaminsky. Tras finalizar la escuela se alistó en el ejército y durante la II Guerra Mundial sirvió como especialista en la retirada de minas. A partir de 1945 trabajó como percusionista en cabarés y como cómico en recintos feriales y en la radio. Además, desempeñó tareas de periodista y redactor de anuncios y espacios televisivos. Desde 1949 hasta 1957 diseñó, junto a Woody Allen, entre otros, gags para los espacios televisivos del célebre cómico Sid Caesar. En 1962 escribió el guión para el cortometraje The Critic von Ernest Pinthoff, que le supuso en 1964 su primera candidatura para un Oscar. Mel Brooks debutó como director en 1966 con la sátira Los productores, cuyo guión fue galardonado con un Oscar en 1968. Durante las décadas de 1970 y 1980 su labor como director de parodias cinematográficas se vio coronada por diferentes éxitos. Entre sus obras más famosas se cuentan El jovencito Frankenstein (1974), Sillas de montar calientes (1974), La última locura (1976), La loca historia del mundo (1981) y La loca historia de las galaxias (1987). Durante la década de 1990 vieron la luz Qué asco de vida (1991) y Las locas locas aventuras de Robin Hood (1993). En numerosas ocasiones también ha interpretado papeles principales en sus películas, como en La loca historia de las galaxias. Desde 1979 Mel Brooks también se dedica a la producción: además de sus propias películas ha producido entre otras El hombre elefante (1980), de David Lynch, y La mosca (1986), de David Cronenberg.
