Director de cine estadounidense, nacido en Salt Lake City. Frank Borzage ocupa un lugar muy especial entre los numerosos artesanos que poblaron el Hollywood clásico, capaces de saltar del western a los filmes bélicos o las comedias sofisticadas mostrando una eficacia narrativa y unos conocimientos técnicos dignos de admiración. La singularidad de este cineasta radica en que, aún sabiendo desempeñar excelentemente el papel de simple trabajador al servicio de un complejo engranaje industrial, supo mantener siempre unas constantes de estilo visual caracterizadas por la poética sensibilidad de sus imágenes y el romanticismo de su puesta en escena. Realizador de aproximadamente un centenar de películas, Borzage es sobre todo conocido como firmante de un puñado de excelentes melodramas románticos que se cuentan entre los mejores de la historia del cine, caso de El séptimo cielo (1927) o Torrentes humanos (1928). aunque sin embargo su figura permanece todavía un tanto oscurecida por otros grandes cineastas del género como John M. Stahl o Douglas Sirk. Actor de sólida formación teatral Frank Borzage recaló en el mundo del cine gracias a Thomas H. Ince, quien en plena crisis escénica le ofreció la oportunidad de trabajar en un medio que apenas estaba dando sus primeros pasos. Debido a la mala prensa que tenía el cine entre determinadas elites burguesas, Borzage decidió camuflar su nombre bajo seudónimo con el fin de que, una vez terminada lo que consideraba una fugaz etapa, pudiera volver al teatro sin quedar marcado como intérprete. El primer largometraje que le reportó cierta fama fue Humoresque (1920), una fábula romántica donde Borzage comenzó a mostrarse como un realizador atento a los mínimos detalles y cercano a lo barroco. A finales de la década de los veinte, y todavía en plena etapa muda, dos largometrajes le catapultaron definitivamente a la fama, El séptimo cielo (1927) y El ángel de la calle (1928). La modernidad de su realización, próxima en ocasiones a determinados postulados de la vanguardia francesa e influida también por el cine expresionista alemán, le valió calurosos elogios de la crítica y del público, convirtiéndose de esta manera en uno de los valores más prometedores de Hollywood.
