Guionista y director cinematográfico inglés nacido en Londres. Hijo de la actriz Judy Campbell y hermano de Jane Birkin, fue galardonado con el premio que concede la Royal Television Society por The Lost Boys (1978), la trilogía de películas basada en su biografía de J. M. Barrie. Más adelante ganó un premio BAFTA y fue candidato a los Óscar con el documental Sredni Vashtar (1981). En 1993 se alzó con el Oso de Plata del Festival de Cine de Berlín con El jardín de cemento. Entre otros, fue el autor del guión junto a Luc Besson, de Juana de Arco (1999), dirigida por el propio Besson.
