Charles Ruggles tuvo una de las carreras más largas de Hollywood, con más de 60 años y más de 100 películas. Hizo su debut cinematográfico en 1914 en The Patchwork Girl of Oz (1914) y trabajó de manera constante desde entonces. Fue memorablemente emparejado con Mary Boland en una serie de comedias a principios de la década de 1930, y fue uno de los más destacados en la comedia estelar If I Had a Million (1932), como un hombre acosado y muy humillado que finalmente se vuelve loco en una cacharrería. La ligera estatura de Ruggles y sus gestos distintivos (su forma de hablar agitada y nerviosa, su mirada a menudo confusa cada vez que los acontecimientos parecían a punto de abrumarlo, lo cual era frecuente) lo hicieron querer por generaciones de cinéfilos.
