Director de cine estadounidense nacido en Chicago, Illinois. En su tercer año de secundaria en la Lake View High School, formó con varios amigos un pequeño club de radio. Se graduó en 1923, año en que las emisoras de radio empezaron a aparecer por todo Chicago. Comenzó como operador jefe en el WENR de su ciudad natal. Cuando las imágenes irrumpieron a finales de los años 20, se trasladó a Hollywood para trabajar como técnico de sonido para la United Artists y con directores clásicos como Frank Capra. Debutó como director de largometrajes con Blondie’s Secret (1948).
