Director de cine estadounidense cuyas preocupaciones sobre el individuo y la sociedad quedaron reflejadas en sus películas de mayor éxito. Brooks llegó al cine desde el mundo de la radio, medio en el que trabajó primero como guionista. En sus películas evocó el enfrentamiento entre las costumbres sociales y las exigencias morales o políticas. Entre las más célebres se encuentran: Crisis (1950), Deadline USA (1952), Semilla de maldad (1955), sobre la delincuencia juvenil, Sangre sobre la tierra (1957), sobre el racismo, y La gata sobre el tejado de zinc (1958), basada en el texto de Tennessee Williams. Se expresó de manera aún más brillante en El fuego y la palabra (1960) y en Lord Jim (1965). Asimismo, realizó una versión cinematográfica de la novela de Truman Capote A sangre fría (1967). Fue también autor de numerosas novelas.
