Director de cine norteamericano. Graduado en la Escuela Secundaria Fairfield de California en 1987, es además guionista, productor, editor y actor, lo que le ha convertido en un personaje polifacético dentro del mundo del cine. Aunque ha coincidido con grandes compañeros de profesión, como por ejemplo James Cameron, le gusta escribir y dirigir sus propias películas. Muestra de ello son Sangre, balas y gasolina (1998), donde también participó como actor, Narc (2002) y Ases calientes (2006). En 2010 estrenó una de las adaptaciones a la gran pantalla más esperadas por el público que creció junto a la serie norteamericana El equipo A. La serie original fue protagonizada por George Peppard, Mr. T, Dwight Schultz y Dirk Benedict. Una de las características de las películas de Joe Carnahan es que utiliza a estrellas de la música negra como actores, por ejemplo Busta Rhymes en Narc (2002) y Alicia Keys y Common en Ases calientes (2006). Aparte de un gran amante del séptimo arte, es también un gran aficionado al fútbol y apoya al Manchester United.
