Actor y director británico. Nació en Cambridge y se formó en Leicester y en la Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA). Trabajó en el teatro desde 1941, y debutó en el cine en 1942 con Sangre, sudor y lágrimas, de Noel Coward. El éxito le llegó en 1947 con The Man Within, de Bernard Knowles, según la novela Historia de una cobardía de Graham Greene; tanto en ésta como en la anterior interpretaba el papel de un cobarde. Estos dos papeles, unidos al del asesino de Brighton Rock (1947, de John Boulting), también basado en un texto de Graham Greene, le encasillaron en ese tipo de personajes hasta Private's Progress (1956, de Boulting), con la que dio un salto decisivo en su carrera como actor. Su trayectoria ganaría en importancia al coproducir y protagonizar El amargo silencio (1960, de Guy Green) y por sus apariciones en el cine estadounidense a partir de La gran evasión (1963, de John Sturges). Su primer trabajo como director fue Oh, What a Lovely War! (1969), aunque su consagración definitiva no llegó hasta Gandhi (1982), producción realizada en Hollywood que ganaría ocho premios Oscar (entre otros, el de mejor película, director y actor principal), a la que siguieron Grita libertad (1987) y Tierras de penumbra (1993). Después de su actuación en Jugadores de ajedrez (1977, de Satyajit Ray) y El factor humano (1980, de Otto Preminger), dejó la interpretación por un tiempo, hasta su retorno con Parque jurásico (1993, de Steven Spielberg).
