Wilbert Bill Cobbs (Cleveland, Ohio, 16 de junio de 1934) es un actor estadounidense de televisión y cine. Ha participado en más de 120 programas de televisión y películas. Cobbs nació en Cleveland, Ohio con una madre ama de casa y un padre que trabajaba en la construcción.1 Sus padres le inculcaron un sentido de autoconfianza y humildad. Como actor aficionado actuó en la obra Purlie Victorious de Ossie Davis en la Casa de Teatro Karamu. Cobbs fue técnico de radar en la Fuerza Aérea durante ocho años. También trabajó en oficinas de productos en IBM, y como vendedor de coches en Cleveland. En 1970, a la edad de 36, se fue a Nueva York para trabajar como actor. Allí rechazó un trabajo en el departamento de ventas de NBC para tener tiempo para las audiciones. Se mantenía a sí mismo conduciendo un taxi, reparando equipamiento de oficinas, vendiendo juguetes y haciendo trabajos ocasionales. Su primer rol de actor profesional fue en Ride a Black Horse en el Negro Ensemble Company. Desde ahí, empezó a aparecer en pequeñas actuaciones de teatros, teatros de la calle, teatros regionales y en el Eugene O'Neill Theater. Hijo de un albañil y de un ama de casa, Bill Cobbs creció en un hogar humilde y sin lujos mientras descubría a temprana edad su interés por el arte dramático. Militó en una compañía de teatro amateur antes de ingresar en el ejército, donde trabajó durante varios años como técnico de radares. Tras una etapa como vendedor de coches, Cobbs puso rumbo a Nueva York convencido de que había llegado la hora de hacer realidad su sueño. De casting en casting, no consiguió su primer papel en la pantalla grande hasta los 40 años en el thriller Pelham 1, 2, 3. Con todo no fue fácil hacerse un sitio y un nombre y no fue hasta mediados de los 80 que Cobbs comenzó a recoger los frutos del duro trabajo en filmes como Entre pillos anda el juego, Cotton Club o El color del dinero. Desde entonces es uno de los secundarios afroamericanos más carismáticos de la pantalla grande (El guardaespaldas, Demolition Man o Noche en el museo) y de la pequeña (Al otro lado, JAG: Alerta roja).
