Director de cine británico, nacido en Wellington. Dio los primeros pasos artísticos en el mundo del teatro, interviniendo en diversas obras tanto en Londres como en Nueva York. En los años cuarenta marchó a Hollywood en donde fue contratado por la Paramount, estudio en el que pasó toda la década hasta que en los cincuenta comenzó a deambular por la Columbia, R.K.O., Warner y otras. Desde 1960 se centró exclusivamente en la televisión, desarrollando una prolífica carrera en este medio.
