Refusant l'identité que lui impose l'orphelinat de Hong Kong où il est placé, un jeune garçon prend la fuite. Devenu adulte, sous l'identité de Simon Templar il se signale par ses talents de voleur. Ses dons aux bonnes œuvres lui valent son surnom : « Le Saint ». Il décide d'assurer sa retraite en vendant la formule de fission à froid à Ivan Tretiak, un homme d'affaires russe qui rêve du pouvoir.
